Tiki Bar Review #52 False Idol – San Diego

I feel like I’m in an old movie from the 40’s when I’m drinking at False Idol …

False Idol is what I like to call a perfect tiki bar. What I mean by a perfect tiki bar is that all the elements that create a great tiki experience are there. This includes great service, well-crafted cocktails, music and of course décor. When I heard that Martin Cate was behind False Idol, I knew it was going to be great and it did not disappoint.

False Idol is hidden inside Craft & Commerce.

Well, it used to be hidden behind a false freezer door but the fire department said that it was unsafe so now there is a small cavernous entrance that leads you inside.

False Idol feels big and small at the same time. All the seating is located around the perimeter of the room while the center of the room is open.

False Idol fills up pretty quickly and it literally becomes standing room only. Luckily, I went on a weekday and things were mellow at least for a little while and it gave me a chance to check out the décor.

There are two things that will jump out at you at False Idol,  the unbelievable amount of fishing float balls above the bar …

And the Bosko masks that cover the walls …

Erica and Alex having a great time at False Idol

The drinks at False Idol are top notch and I wouldn’t expect anything less from a bar that Martin Cate is behind. Each drink was very unique made with great care. My buddy Joe and I had so many cocktails that I can’t really tell you what each drink was like but I can tell you this, they all rocked! Here’s some of the drinks we had …

151 Swizzle …

Hyperion …

Demerara Dry Float …

Lona, Pearl Of The Night …

La Fantome …

Shelter Island Sling …

Jet Pilot …

I’d like to give a shout-out to our server Melissa. She kept the drinks coming and we kept drinking them!

I also want to give props to Lamar Kumangai …

He is the bar manager at False Idol and did a great job of creating a tiki experience that was truly unique.

False Idol is a dark, yet colorful tiki bar, but one thing stood out to me and it created a feeling that I never experienced at a tiki bar before. The lighting above the table was just a white light, not a colored light or anything fancy, just a small beam of white light. Because False Idol is a very dark bar, this white light made it hard for me to see color beyond the darkness. My chair faced the wall and it made everything I saw in black and white. I honestly felt like I was in an old movie from the 40’s. What I love most about tiki bars, is the escapism but what I love even more is when a tiki bar can be a time machine!

Yeah, I know it says Forbidden Island, but you get the idea!
