I was pretty much born and raised into the tiki lifestyle…

When Kailani was growing up, she spent her summers on O’ahu where she learned Hula. She performed as a child and never stopped! Maybe you can see Kailani dance in the San Diego area or you can come to Kailani and Alan’s Tiki Playground.  The Tiki Playground is an outside tiki bar that looks over an impressive view over El Cajon. Hanging on the walls are pictures of Kailani’s family and various tiki and Hawaiian items that Alan has found over the years. Kailani and Alan are very welcoming and The Tiki Playground might be one of the most relaxing home tiki bars I ever visited. Aloha!

Tiki VIP #42 Kat Reeder – Tiki Artist from Honolulu

Kat Reeder is an artist that lives in Honolulu and her artwork makes me want to get on a plane right now and head to Hawaii! Kat is a digital artist, but her work looks like it’s from the 60’s and 70’s. I could totally see Kat’s “vintage-inspired tropical glamour girls” hanging on the walls of a travel agency or in the pages of a magazine. Tiki is escapism, but it can also be a time machine. Kat’s work will take you back to a simpler time. Here is her story …

Myth: There are tons of Tiki bars in Hawaii!

Reality: Well, not really…

The main appeal of a Tiki bar is to create the illusion that you are in a tropical paradise. When you’re actually in Hawaii, why would you need the illusion? You’re actually there! What’s tough is finding a bar that actually makes good drinks. All Mai Tais are not created equal in Hawaii and good luck finding a place that makes a good one.
