What is the tiki scene like where you live?
Ryan- Well, being in the South LA area, I have multiple choices. The tiki circle in this area is vast.

What brought you into the tiki lifestyle and how long has it been part of your life?
Ryan- Well it began about 24 years ago. I used to frequent Don’s in Seal Beach. Throughout the years I met more and more welcoming people and started going to Tiki Ti and Tonga Hut

Can you give a little history of how it all came together?
Ryan- Twelve years ago I had a small so-so tiki bar in my dining room. I had bought most of the decor from oceanic arts as I only lived 5 mins away. When covid happened and bars shut down I decided it was time to make a full functional bar. With the help of a few friends Kanaloa’s Lair came to be in about 6 months. Everything was custom built. And sourced from all over the western United States.

Any story behind the name of your bar?
Ryan- After searching for a name for a long time I finally went through Hawaiian god mythology and found that Kanaloa suited my direction of the bar and lounge area.

What is your favorite Tiki drink? What do you think makes the perfect cocktail?
Ryan- I have way too many. I do love the originals. I think just the right amount of savory and sweetness make the perfect cocktail.

What is your favorite Tiki bar? Not including your own!
Ryan- I would have to say for cocktails it would be Smuggler’s Cove. For friends and atmosphere, I’d say Tiki Ti.

Outside of great drinks, what do you think are essential elements in creating the perfect Tiki environment?
Ryan- I would say the atmosphere, ohana and of course the outfits!

What does the future hold for you and your home tiki bar?
Ryan- Well I’m just about out of room so not sure. If I ever move it will become its own stand-alone building.

Anything else you would like to add?
Ryan- If you are motivated and have a few bucks anything is possible!
